Chapter 2 Techniques for testing (Personal Opinion)

Chapter 2
Techniques For Testing
By LIC Yendrick Brown Chollette

We as teachers have the necessity and the obligation of using the different techniques to apply in our tests.
But how can we do it?, simple; first is the classification of test items and tasks, using it correctly can demonstrate what students can do.
Second is using subjective or objective questions.
Subjective items are the ones who require students to produce longer and more opened answers.
Objective items are very popular with language teachers, and are usually close response items.
Third are the multiple choice questions, which are used all over the world, the idea is to choose the correct answer and be able to overcome the distractors.
Some common violations are:
-          Grammatical inconsistency, it is writing a word different to the options
-          3 for 1 split, 3 answers different that don’t have anything related.
-          Impure items, 2 correct answers.
-          Apples and oranges, to answers are combine.
-          Unparallel options, some answers are longer than others.
-          Sensitivity, it brings an negative impact.

-          And others are:
Cloze gap-fill items
This is when a word or phrase is replaced by a blank in a sentence. According to Harrison(1983) there are two types of gap fills
Functional(prepositions, articles, conjunctions.
Semantic(nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs)
Short answer/completion items
This one is to ask students to answer in a few words, phrases, or sentences. This will encourage students to learn and know the answers rather than just recognize, second students produce the answer, third they are easy to construct, fourth especially for checking and understanding a text and finally these questions types can test higher-order thinking skills.
Essay questions
These offer students the greatest opportunity to construct their own responses.

Some tips are:
  •           Make similar level questions.
  •           Write questions that force students to use thinking skills.
  •           Allow enough space.
  •           Be specific with answering information.
  •           Share evaluation rubrics prior to the exam.

Assesing English Language Learners (chapter 1 personal opinion)

The process of developing assesment
By LIC Yendrick Brown Chollette

Its important to know that assessment includes the phases of planning, development, administration, analysis, feedback, and reflection.

So when we speak about assessing it is necessary to know that it involves a whole.
The process are: first planning, second the specifications, this includes the formats, techniques, timings, and others. Third is preparing students for the assessment, and finally how do we apply that in a cycle.

What do we want to know?
Importance of assesing
  •           We want information about how our students are progressing.
  •           We want to know if the assesments are working for us.
  •           We want feedback about all aspects of our program.
  •           And finally taking a big step and correcting according to the students needs.

Principles Of Effective Materials Development

                                          Principles Of Effective Materials Development

By Prof Lic Yendrick Brown

The topic develops principles, procedures of how to apply materials in an effective way.
It is very important to focus on what we call 4 needs(Hall 1995):
  1. Need to communicate
  2. For long term goals
  3. for authenticity
  4. student- centeredness.
I believe that every material is fundamental to have learners  exposed to real life situations, provide feedback, chances, and stimulation. This will help learners to be motivated and interested in learning.
According to (Jolly and Bolitho) we should identify the need for materials, the use, production, and of course the evaluation, I consider that every material should be created having all of these principles in consideration because that way we wil be able to apply the different procedures.
Speaking about materials they have to be applied or should be created thinking on how well or how useful, important, relevant, necessary, and helpful would it be for learners. Try to work on the 4 skills for learners to work in 4 different ways(more complete).
